The extra reading material at the back of the book explains that this is a fictionalization of the author's own story growing up with hippy parents during the summer of when she lived in California near the beach and her parents actually did throw naked swim parties in their backyard swimming pool. The main character, Jamie is fourteen and is embarrassed by her parents' nudity and of their friends. I think I feel the same about this book.
